Last Dance - The Raveonettes
“Your lipstick smeared sad, I adore you.”
Adele - Hometown Glory
I’ve been in love with this song for about a year now. It’s simple and beautiful. Adele’s memories rush through this song, embracing you like warm water, a flood of memories each time you listen in. Mabye I love it because I’m a sucker for nostalgia put down into words and music. But what music is better than music that makes you feel something?
Buggles - I am a Camera
This is possibly the most underrated music video of the early 80s.
I hate how the audio is slightly off in this version, but it was the best I could find.
I just listened to this song and Adele for the first time. My bad. I guess I like this gal a bit.
The Raveonettes - Black/White
From their new EP Beauty Dies. I love how their sound continues to to evolve and build on their previous work, while still going into new realms.
Homecoming - The Teenagers
Ironically, my parents arrived at our home from their vaction when I started listening to this song.
Buggles - Clean Clean
Basically, a lip-synced performance of the song. They’re so synth that they can’t even sing for real!
The Buggles - Living in the Plastic Age
While not the blog proper about the title track of the album, I just watched this video for the first time and I love a lot of it. Many of the visuals are quite surreal and interesting.
Overall, my favorite aspects are probably the different models in various states of undress and body paint. The scene with the telepone woman, and the lead singer appearing within her “boxes” is amazing to watch, and the full body paint in red makes her surreal. Also surreal is the use of the two women painted black who function as keyboards.
While I really dig these images, one particular aspect that strikes me as odd and interesting is how all of the robot servants, or whatever they are, are either women, or children. While the idea of a fembot isn’t a new one, it’s quite interesting that only female robots would be serving the population in the Age of Plastic. Perhaps they are commenting on gender roles. Perhaps they just wanted hot models painted up. Either way, it looks quite amazing and makes us question what role women will play in the future and how the image of women will be combined with technology.
Another aspect I love is the costuming. The full plastic suit almost has some timeless apsects to it in it’s quite plain colors, but rahter bold choice of materials. The glasses come off as slightly dated, but still have a nerd chic look to them.
At times it gets very cluttered, but with so many images, it’s hard to imagine it not getting that way. Overall, a very cool, and perhaps underrated, music video.
a-ha - Take On Me
VH1 Classic is showing 80 hours of the 80s this weekend. They are goin in alphabetical order, and I melt over this song and its video.
